  • Gravitating the Unknown, the Unknowable and the Unforeseen (Media Theory / Spezielle Gebiete MW)
    Seminar
    Kurs Nr.: DM.M-MT
    Semester: SS 2021

From the bottom of things that lay beyond our comprehension, the unclassifiable, the never-yetfelt, the “new” emerges and pulls our senses. In opposition to the scientific conquering of a terra incognita, as artists and designers, we rather gravitate it as either the unknown, the unknowable, or the unforeseen in search of new modes of affect. We embrace the uncertainty of the real in ways that engender intimacy; we work towards the expansion of a shared scope of imagination; and we shape, modulate, and give voice to realities that stand beyond our rational thinking. What things lay beyond knowing? How to make kin with that which escapes rational and scientific apprehension? In this practice-and-theory course we will explore our own personal methods of intimacy with such unnamable things. In the first step, we will engage with selected texts and artistic examples by composing a personal diary of our gravitations with the subject in relation to our own practical work done in other courses during the semester, culminating in one full-day workshop. In the second step, we will each work on an a project that embodies our intimate findings and meet for collective discussions and progress assessment. The course is open for students of digital media, fine arts, integrated design and music. Attendance in all of the 5 sessions is mandatory. Besides the attendance, students are expected to compose two outcomes, a “diary” of the encounters and mappings of “the unknown”, and a project (an experiment or prototype). What things lay beyond knowing? How to make kin with that which escapes rational and scientific apprehension? In this practice-and-theory course we will explore our own personal methods of intimacy with unnamable things. In the first step, we will engage with selected texts and artistic examples and short practical exercises on probing for the unknown. In the second step, we will each work on a project (composed both of an artistic and a scientific part) that embodies the research. Sessions will be composed of lectures, discussions, and both individual and collective progress assessment. The course is open for students of digital media, fine arts, integrated design and music. Attendance in all sessions is mandatory, except for those who have already participated in the Part I of the seminar.
