• The Augmented Abject, Basics in the Art of Cartooning
    Gestalterische Projektarbeit
    Kurs Nr.: ID.BA.IP.09
    Semester: SS 2021

Artistic Animation Seminar: Wednesdays 14 – 18, Prof. Kati Barath, Alexandra Portele, Ulrike Isenberg, start 13.10. Room: online or presence at the HfK, Speicher XI, 1.11.070 Max participants: 20 students This semester we will focus on the compressed narrative of the animated gif. GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) are animations that can loop over and over again or that stop at the last image after one round. Characteristic for the gif is that it’s normally short and compressed, both concerning time, file size and storyline. The gif was introduced as a simple animation format for the web, often in the form of advertising banners, but has now formed it’s own genre of animation, strongly affiliated with meme culture. The formal format of the course is a merge of an Interdisciplinary seminar, an Integrated Design Gestalterische Project and a theory course. All three parts are open for all HfK students. Participants can choose if they want to do all parts together or the different parts separately. For MA students it’s strictly encouraged to take all the three parts of the course. During the semester a forum or platform for showing animated gif’s will be established, both physically and online. Those who have already taken part in animation seminars know that there are always analog animated movement and metamorphosis exercises as an introduction. An introduction to the basic animation techniques enables you to work independently; the animations made during the course and examples from different times are viewed and discussed. The course is planned for work in teams of two. Requirements for this course are a digital device, an animation app (for Apple devices this would be e.g. Stop Motion Studio, available for free download) and internet access. Even if you can work in the trick film studio at HfK again, it makes sense to set up your own animation workstation. The classes will take place on site if possible and if not possible on, or most likely in a combination of presence and offline. All animation techniques are possible. As always, regular participation is mandatory. The structure for the course follow these steps: Preparation (20%) 1. Introduction 2. Research Creation (60%) 3. Inspiration 4. Storyboard/Animatic 5. Filming/Drawing 6. Editing Presentation (20%) 7.

    Kurs Nr.: ID.MA.TP1/3.04
    Semester: WS 2021/22

We will start this semester with a get-together and workshop. We will introduce ourselves and give a preview to the semester in 9D. Related to their particular ideas, desires and practices students are invited to choose one or more of the following topics connected to the framework of the 9D Master’s Studio. 1. Temporary Spaces: Asli Serbest This semester we will realize a collective spatial intervention at Kunsthalle Baden-Baden (https://conditionsofanecessity.net), exchange hands-on knowledge and necessary skills for spatial works, and develop our individual projects in the collective framework of the Temporary Spaces class. With the aim to critically reflect space as a temporary category, Temporary Spaces class deals with historical, political, social, technological, and aesthetic aspects of spatial production. Beyond disciplinary conventions and boundaries, the class explores practices that include various media and experimentation with space, in different scales, from urban interventions to video, installations, performances, sound, and text. The works are research based spanning critical theory and ancient philosophy, feminist and queer theories, socialist architectural utopias etc. Ultimately, Temporary Spaces is a platform for the collaborative creation of reflexive aesthetic experiences.… 2. Samuel Nyholm: see “Kursangebot in the Veranstalltungs Verzeichnis” 3. Interplay or Alchemy of the Cinematic / Beat Brogle The impact of film works through the "interplay" from image and sound, cut and montage. In the course, we will practice whit cinematic phenomenologies in a "basic research" way. "Experimental systems, then, are extremely tricky devices; they must be seen as sites of emergence, as structures we have devised to capture the unthinkable. They are like spider webs. Something must be able to get caught in them. Something of which one does not know exactly what it is, nor exactly when it will come. They are devices for creating unpredictable events. " The molecular biologist Mahlon Hoagland has spoken of "surprise generators" in this context. / From the article by Hans-Jörg Rheinberger, May 5, 2007, NZZ Online The title 9D indicates the sum of 2D + 3D + 4D. It addresses, on the one hand, a transversal approach to making things across 2D, 3D, and 4D, that is, beyond strict disciplinary, medial or institutional borders. On the other hand, 9D refers to the 9 or more dimensions (critical, non-linear, affective, queer, ecological, archaeological, etc.) that underly each idea, thing, or project and that call for research strategies, methods, and a process based thinking and making. This thinking and creating takes place within a collective environment where students will learn to develop projects in exchange with others and share different modes of working, (un-)learning, and ordering.

  • Planung and Play – LW/WS Spaß mit Plany
    Prüfung
    Kurs Nr.: ID.BA.BA LW2
    Semester: SS 2022

When I, during my first year as a student at the Arts and Crafts University in Stockholm, realised that we were supposed to hold a lecture at our graduation in front of an audience, I got completely terrified. This anxiety lasted for the rest of my time at school. I tried to come up with numerous strategies how to somehow escape this situation and at the end decided to make a film, which I calculated would reduce the time I had to talk with half. Much later I realised that holding lectures is a kind of theatre and nervousness can also be pleasant. In this class we will learn how to: 1. Make nervousness pleasant 2. Building really cool exhibition with as little effort as possible 3. To develop our ideas in continuous discussion with a nice little group of students and a Scandinavian teacher who can understand German quite ok 4. Prepare for the after-graduation life Looking forward to spend your last HfK semester with you.

  • Children’s books and Pasolini
    Gestalterische Projektarbeit
    Kurs Nr.: ID.BA.GP.01
    Semester: WS 2022/23

This semester in Illustration will offer a relatively straightforward and quite typical illustration assignment, namely illustrating and producing a children’s book. Contrary to previous semesters, there will be no complex theoretical frameworks to enforce before the creative exercises start and the focus is entirely on your development as illustrators. The only atypical element may be the introduction of the Italian film director and poet Pier Paolo Pasolini, as an accompanying theme. This can seem arbitrary and may cast suspicion that it would be because your teacher is an admirer of his work (which is coincidentally the case) but it actually has a relevant didactic function in this context.  A usual misunderstanding concerning children’s books is that they would to be cute, sweet, innocent, clarified and harmless. In reality many of the most successful works for children deal with quite heavy topics, which most children also can relate to and recognise themselves in. To be a child, being confronted with the brutality of the grown up world, social akwardness and and the general brutality of our civilization, is far from a rosy garden. In that sense books like Harry Potter, The Brothers Lionheart, or many of the Grimm fairy tales, is something that many can relate to much more than to, for example, Miffy the rabbit. Even those of us who may wish that the world was more like the Teletubbies or Benoît Brisefere. Our motto for the semester is: It can be nice, but not completely nice. As preparation before the course you are asked to watch any film(s) by Pier Paolo Pasolini, the unchallenged Maestro of unveiled pain (and passion), and pick a theme, narrative, leitmotif, character or anything that may serve as inspiration for you, from his entire cinematic or poetic oeuvre. The first day of the course you will make a short presentation of the theme that you have found, which will included in your children’s book. You will also have to bring the text you book will be based on. The text can either be written by yourself, someone else or an existing text. In either case, the main focus will be on your illustrations and their relation to the story.  Another precondition atypical for our times, but not so much for illustration at the HfK, is that your book needs to be entirely handmade. This concerns all stages of its production, the sketches, the illustrations, the typography, the layout, the printing and the making of the book item itself – all of it need to be created without electronic devices. The use of computers, iPads, phones, e-books etc. will be prohibited during class :( The disposition of the course will be as follows: Preparation (20%)

Introduction
Text analyse
Text/image relations
Storyboard
Dummy
Production (60%)

Sketching
Original
Presentation (20%)

End presentation in class
Exhibition
